Australia is home to the world's oldest living culture - the Aboriginal people - who were thought to have arrived here by boat from South East Asia during the last Ice Age, at least 50,000 years ago. They lived mainly along the coast and at the time of European discovery and settlement, up to one million Aboriginal people lived across the continent as hunters and gatherers. A number of European explorers sailed the coast of Australia, then known as New Holland, in the 17th century. However it wasn’t until 1770 that Captain James Cook chartered the east coast and claimed it for Britain. Established as a penal colony it remained so until 1868 and more free settlers began to flow in from the early 1790s, opening up new frontiers. Australia’s six states became a nation under a single constitution on 1 January 1901. Today Australia is home to people from more than 200 countries and it's modern culture is founded on stories of battlers, bushrangers and brave soldiers, of sporting heroes, working heroes and plucky migrants. It’s all about a fair go, the great outdoors and a healthy helping of irony. Experience the glorious Australian summer, a season of outdoor experiences that lasts from December to February.
